Last BF3 Pole 2006
Result Race 1
Result Race 2

061001-4The highlight of the weekend was undoubtedly getting the last pole position of the 2006 British F3 Championship in tricky weather conditions.

Due to noise restrictions at Thruxton there was no free practice and we had to go straight into the first qualifying. In this session I was able to set the fourth quickest time. Unfortunately on my fastest lap I had to overtake one of the back markers which cost me the possibility of pole position.

The second qualifying session was held in very trick weather conditions as half the circuit was dry and half was wet. Still, Slick tyres were the best option, yet very difficult to handle on the wet parts.  With a big push and some very big slides I managed to set the fastest time handing me the last Pole Position of the 2006 British F3 Season. Overall I was very happy as these two qualifying sessions put me in a very good position for Sunday’s races.

Sadly Sunday turned out to be what I believe the worst race-day in my career. The first race started in dangerously wet conditions and so the race director made the right call to start us behind the safety car. As one of the driver’s ahead of me was a one-off invitational runner, effectively I was lying in third place closely behind Bruno Senna in second. On lap seven Bruno was starting to lose some pace and I got even closer to him. On the exit of the chicane I followed him so closely that the spray was hindering my sight. This caused me to drive off the track with two wheels, when I realised this it was already too late and I spun off. I was able to restart from last place and move myself up to seventh in the final standings.

The start of the second race was once again held in wet conditions, however only slightly wet this time. At the start I was trying to be very cautious no to get wheel spin, this backfired and I stalled. After this dreadful start to the race the only chance to recover was to gamble and pit for slicks. Unfortunately this put me one lap behind the leaders yet there was plenty of time remaining to fight back up the order. The charge through the field went perfectly well and slicks proved to be more than four seconds a lap quicker. As I was in the process of unlapping myself from the fourth placed driver he decided to turn in on me. I’m very upset about this move of Jelley as I was not only clearly faster but also fully along side him on the inside line, he just drove across the track and into me. This collision was the end of my race.

Despite the bad Sunday there are positives to be taken away from this weekend such as our pole position and the pace we have shown all weekend, we will now concentrate and prepare to take this pace to the season finale at Macau (China).
