Again I leave another round of the 2007 championship disappointed. From the first time we went on track on Friday morning, it was clear that getting a lap free from traffic was going to be key to getting a good qualifying time in Bucharest.
In the first qualifying session, there were numerous red flags which made it very difficult to get a good lap in. I was on a very quick lap just at the end of the qualifying when another red flag came out, ending the session with a few minutes to go. It was very frustrating to line up sixth on the grid for race one, when I know that we had the pace to be further up.
Race one was again, very eventful. We started the race under the safety car, due to difficult track conditions. When racing got underway there were numerous accidents and safety car periods and very few racing laps, leaving me with little opportunity to improve my position. I crossed the line fifth.
Qualifying for race two went a little better, the session started off wet, but as it got drier, the times tumbled and it become obvious that I had to get a good lap in right at the end of the session. I managed to put in a lap quick enough to get the fourth spot on the grid, but again, I felt we could have done better.
I had high hopes for race two; my starting position from the second row of the grid put me in a good position for a podium place. Again we started under the safety car and it was a real pity that I didn't get the opportunity to make up positions in a real race start. When racing got underway, I saw an opportunity to get past Atte Mustonen, but he blocked me and I fell back behind him again. Ahead of me, my team mate Alberto Valerio was having a fierce on track battle with Stephen Jelley, which resulted in them both going off track. By now I was fighting for first place and as we exited turn one, I had a better exit than Mustonen and went to the inside to pass him. Unfortunately, he moved over to block me, and kept moving over until there was no room. With no where to go, I touched the wall and then Mustonen made contact, our wheels locked and we skidded off track. It was a very frustrating end to what could have been a great race.
One fifth place finish is a disappointing result to take away from Romania. This was a challenging weekend on a track which required some luck as well as good pace. We must now look towards Snetterton in two weeks time, where hopefully we will be back on the podium. We've had some good tests at Snetterton recently, so I'm feeling positive.
